Secrets Afloat
A school of fish swam by an oval shaped object made of plastic. It bobbed enticingly back and forth. The fish ignored the obvious lure and went on their way. Wait. One loan baby fish curiously went over to the strange floating thing and attempted to put its mouth around it. Immediately it was stuck and started trying to pull away. The fine frog hair gave a pull that traveled up and out of the water to the reel of a fishing pole. Excitedly the man holding the pole began to reel in the fish and put a net underneath it to lift it from the water.
“Would you stop fooling around Major we have a briefing in fifteen minutes.”
“McKay, are you telling me that you don’t enjoy the sport of fishing?”
“What sport? It’s a pool of fish we’ve traded with the Igarians for. Cook Frye usually just dips the net in and a fish leaps into it.”
“Trying to ruin all my fun. It took me two weeks to make this fishing pole and I had to help Katrina in the lab to get the frog hair.”
“Where did she get frog hair from anyways?”
“She’s a biologist who knows with them.”
“Well hurry up we have ten minutes to get there.”
Later in the briefing room, the head of the military and the head of science sat listening to what amounted to weather reports. As it turns out there is an area of ocean on the other side of the planet that is behaving in a weird way. When nearing the area from above the Puddle Jumper sensors go off line. The waves go in random directions from one central location. The one oceanographer Casquo wants to search underneath the water to find out what’s causing the freak nature occurrence. Edward an engineer has been working with Radek to find a way to make the Puddle-Jumpers water submersible. Their major worry was how the water pressure would affect the ship. By increasing the power of the shields they should hold the ship together. After much discussion it was determined that John Sheppard would take a team consisting of him, Casquo to guide them, Radek to keep the ship working and Katrina to study any life forms they find, down into the unknown depths of the ocean in search for the cause of the odd readings.
“Welcome sir to the Puddle Swimmer.” Ford gestured towards the ship.
“What did I say about naming things?!” Sheppard glared at Ford.
“Radek named it, not me.”
Radek smiled sheepishly.
They entered the ship and lifted off, Ford waving them good bye. They traveled around the planet enjoying the scenery until they reached the spot Casquo had marked off. There the waves were all going in opposite directions. “I wonder what’s causing this; there must be something underneath these waves.
“Here we go.” Sheppard dives the ship into the water. The dark water obscures the shield and they’re forced to turn on the lights that Radek had added to the front of the ship. Deep down they find wreckage of an old city, smaller but much like Atlantis. The towers are crushed and flattened to the side. Landing near one section that seems to be the least destroyed, they get in their swim gear.
“I can’t believe there’s another city.” John hands out flashlights and leads them out of the ship. They swim through what was once a balcony. The corridors have been slammed apart, all open to the ocean.
“It must have been the destruction of this city, the power of it that changed the waves above.” Casquo theorized.
“Help me, there is a door here we may be able to move.” Radek Zelenka’s voice came through the coms. They gather together and pull from either side of the door. The whole thing falls apart in their hands. They move it out of the way and carefully enter into another room.
They find themselves in what was once a huge laboratory. Arranged on the side are broken stasis units. Katrina sifts through the broken glass on the floor and finds partially decomposed life forms. “Look at this. Doesn’t this look like that bug that attached itself to Major Sheppard?”
“Major Sheppard’s right here. And yes it does look similar.”
Looking around they find some stasis units still together. Radek and Katrina open one and find what appears to be half ancient and half bug. “Oh my god. Major. This is important.”
Sheppard stops sifting through some of the debris. “That was human. What have they been doing?”
Casquo just as shocked as the rest, offered, “Did the Ancients create the Wraith?”
“Well the Wraith live off of humans but the humans didn’t live in the Pegasus Galaxy all the time.” Radek ponders. “There must be some reason for the collapse of all the civilizations in this galaxy. What if the Ancient’s caused it?”
“Well there must be some documentation left if they were working here. Keep looking. Katrina and Radek go back to the ship and get some containers, let’s see if we can bring back some samples.” Meanwhile John and Casquo began looking around for more information.
