Rodney sat on the pier, his bare feet dangling over the water. He looked up towards the sky, the same sky he saw most days since coming to Atlantis. In a sigh of disgust he stood up to leave. He stopped as he saw John standing near the opened door.
“Just out here to relax, Rodney?” John walked towards him, a smile tugging at his lips.
“I can do that you know, relax. It’s not forbidden.” Rodney stalked past him, picking up his shoes and slipping them on.
“Never said it was. I just don’t expect it from you. You’re always, work, work, work.” John followed Rodney as he stomped down the hall.
“Not always. Especially not now. My concentration has been shot since he died. Mostly I just keep track of what everyone else is doing and pretend to be writing reports.” Rodney shrugged as he divulged this.
“Yeah, I know what you mean. It’ll get better.” Even John didn’t believe it, but he said it anyway, knew it was the thing to say.
Rodney suddenly stopped in the middle of the hall. Looking searchingly in John’s eyes, “Do you ever wish you could just go back and change everything? Not just his death, everyone’s. Every mistake we ever made. Would you still come to Atlantis if you could start over?”
“Woah. Wouldn’t you? I mean, this is our home. I’ve made friends here. I have a life, my career. I finally feel responsible for something that matters.” John peered at Rodney carefully as they began moving again.
“Right, of course.”
As they reached Rodney’s quarters, John asked the question that was bugging him.
“What brought this on? Don’t you want to be here?”
“I’m not so sure anymore.”
“You have to have something to live for, I thought you had that.”
Rodney sighed. “Something sure, Atlantis, my work, the fight against the Wraith, even a general hope that we could save people in this galaxy. But not, someone. Someone to live for. I don’t have that.”
John grabbed Rodney’s shoulder and turned him around. “You have me.”
Rodney shook his head. “You don’t mean that, not in the way I’m talking about.”
John gazed into Rodney’s eyes as he came to a decision. John opened Rodney’s door and guided him in. When the door closed, John took Rodney’s face in his hands. “Yes, I do.” And he kissed him.
