Summary: Cas left pretty quickly without saying goodbye. Dean learns the surprising reason from an unexpected source.

It had been six months since Dean had last seen Castiel. In those six months, Dean attempted to be a family man with Lisa and Ben. Also in those months, Dean being a paranoid son of a bitch, noticed someone was stalking him. It turns out that it was Sam, and after nearly killing him to make sure Sam was really Sam, Dean said his apologies to Lisa. She didn’t slap him, but gave him a kiss and made certain he understood that he wasn’t welcomed back anymore for Ben’s sake. Dean and Sam were back on the road. They visited a teary Bobby and then started going on hunts again. Apparently now that all the demons were taking a breather, the other sick monsters were out playing again. Though it felt back to normal, back before hell, Dean was grumpier than he had ever been. He tried to ignore that after a couple months of Sam being understanding, Sam stopped being subtle about his annoyance with Dean’s constant complaints. Sam being a smartypants had already figured out it had to do with Cas. So Sam also being a do-gooder decided he should make Dean face his abandonment issues. Dean told him to fuck off. This made Sam pissy. Which was fun for a change. Not.

Anyways, after six months of no word from or about Cas, Dean was rudely awakened by the flutter of wings in the air. But it wasn’t Cas that magically appeared in their motel room. It was Gabriel. Gabriel that Dean could have sworn was dead.

“Dude, what the fuck are you? You were definitely dead.”

“Hah. I can fake it with the best of them Deaniepoo.” Gabriel plopped down on Sam’s bed. Sam didn’t even stir. Just great. Alone with the psycho wannabe trickster.

“Alright then. Nice to know you’re the coward we all thought you were. What are you doing here?” Dean carefully got out of bed, keeping on eye on Gabriel while shoving his legs into his pants. He hated being undressed around this douche.

Gabriel smirked at Dean. He couldn’t help it. Smirking was his default expression. “I’m here on behalf of Castiel. Since he can’t be here himself, I took it upon myself to make sure you were aware of his situation. I thought it unfair that you were completely oblivious. Granted, even I didn’t know what was going on till recently. Castiel’s good with secrets apparently. Who knew.”

Dean blinked. “Excuse me? What situation?” Since Gabriel once again smirked, Dean had to stop himself from punching him, his knuckles tingling at the thought of being broken on the guy’s face.

Gabriel made himself more comfortable, practically sitting on Sam. Dean decided not to care, as it was Sam’s own fault for not waking up, even if Gabriel was behind Sam’s deep sleep. “Let me tell you a story. Once upon a time, God created the universe. Then he got bored and let the universe create itself. Hence stars are born without God’s interference. So then God created a bunch of angels. That was just neato, but again he got tired of the minutia of creating angels, so he moved onto other things, such as eventually creating humans. But just like how humans breed themselves, there have been more angels born since God stopped creating them. Angels don’t have a gender like humans, nor do they have sex like humans, but an angel’s grace can intertwine itself with another’s until amazingly a new grace is born, the beginnings of new angel life. Here’s the thing though Dean,” Gabriel paused to enjoy Dean’s dumbstruck face, as Dean certainly hadn’t been expecting an angel’s version of the birds and the bees speech. “It’s been known from time to time that a human soul could also mingle with an angel’s grace to create new life.”

“Um, okay. What does this have to do with Cas?”

“I’m getting there, hold your horses.” Gabriel leaned back and waited while Dean started tapping his thigh impatiently. “Castiel went into hell, right? Brought you out of the pit. But to do that, to heal your soul and all that jazz, he got really close to you. Like really close, his grace and your soul for a time were so twisted around each other that Castiel once told me he had a hard time separating from you.”

Dean opened his mouth to speak. But shut it quick as his mind shied away from what Gabriel was implying.

“For the first year you knew him, Castiel was a little dense himself. He thought that there was just something wrong with his Grace. And then he died. When he was brought back, he knew it was because of God, but not the why and how of it. But as his grace seemed to get weaker and weaker, he finally became aware that he wasn’t alone. That his grace was feeding someone else. Which is when he understood that for the time being he couldn’t be killed. See God made one stipulation when he let angels create other angels. Knowing that there would always be a danger or infighting for that matter, all expectant angels couldn’t be killed as it would mean the end of new angel life. So though Castiel became human-like it was mostly because his grace at the moment had only one real use. So there you have it.” Gabriel waited. And waited, while Dean’s brain tried to function.

“Let me see if I understand. Cas is pregnant?!” Dean felt a little lightheaded.

“Yes, and the kid’s yours.”

Now Dean felt like puking. He spent several minutes trying to get air in his lungs and hope that his stomach would settle. “Okay Gabe, how long are angels pregnant for?”

“In human time? About three years. Which is why Cas flew away in a panic. All the stress of the apocalypse made the angel baby want to come out too soon. You should have been there. Cas was shouting incoherently about being preggers, and it being too early. Everyone was shocked. We all thought we’d gone sterile. And that Cas had kept this a secret from all of us during a war... Anyways me and some others were able to calm Cas and the baby. No one wants to see a premie angel, that’s how Lucifer was born. Cas is staying in heaven on bed rest for the time being. Hence him not being able to be here in person. Oh and he’s so going to kick my ass for telling you.” Gabriel stood up. “I’ll keep you in the loop, but for now I got to get back just in case. I’m his birth coach.” With that Gabriel was gone.

Dean looked around. He decided to go back to bed. It had probably all been a crazy dream anyway.

When Dean woke up the next morning he found a note next to his pillow. “It wasn’t a dream dumbass, there’s a new angel on the way. Congratulations.” Signed ‘Gabe’.

Sam woke up to find Dean hyperventilating on the bed beside him. “Shit.” Sam kneeled down in front of Dean. “What happened? Dean take a breath and talk to me.”

Dean’s mumbling was incomprehensible. Eventually Sam was able to discern the words, ‘Cas’ and ‘father’. Which didn’t make any sense as Dean never seemed to care about God before. In desperation Sam resorted to slapping Dean across the face. Silence descended. Sam was surprised that Dean didn’t retaliate. But he was so messed up that the slap calmed him and he didn’t get angry.

Sighing, Sam asked again, “What’s wrong?” Mutely Dean handed over the note. After reading it Sam was still confused. “What new angel?”

“Cas and mine.” For several minutes that’s all Dean would say. But then Dean got sick of Sam’s confused expression and with a huff clarified. “When Cas pulled me out of hell my soul knocked him up.”

Sam choked on his spit. “What? Dean what the hell?”

Rubbing his neck with embarrassment, Dean explained about Gabriel coming to him, telling him that Castiel was up in heaven waiting to birth a new angel, and that somehow this angel was part his.

Besides the fact that he also had thought Gabriel was dead, Sam’s mind focused on the fact that Gabriel was a big liar and probably screwing with Dean’s head. He’d never heard of angels having other angels. When he made this suggestion, Dean sighed that he’d thought the same thing, and didn’t know what to believe.

For two more months Dean and Sam continued their hunts without any word. When Gabriel finally showed again Dean hit him out of spite. It didn’t hurt because Gabriel in kindness moved out of the way before Dean’s fist could connect. Dean didn’t know whether to be grateful or not.

“What’s up?” Dean asked indifferently. Or well, that’s how he tried to present himself.

“It’s time Papa. And I being the great friend that I am, came here to bring you to heaven to witness this miracle. You won’t be blinded by what you see, because again I’m a great friend.”

Dean’s jaw dropped. In a hoarse whisper he asked, “Does Cas know I’m going to be there?”

Sighing Gabriel confided, “Yes. He screamed and begged me to bring you. An angel’s screams of labor are the most hideous thing you’ve ever heard. I practically ran here to get away from it.” When Dean didn’t move, Gabriel glared at him. “I’m not going back there without you.”

“Okay okay. Wow. I’m coming.” He turned to Sam. “When I come back I’m going to be a father.”

“Yeah of an angel.” Sam shook his head.

“I know. Isn’t this crazy?” Dean stepped near to Gabriel and suddenly found himself literally standing on a cloud with stars shining above him. “I thought heaven was all around us, not really in the sky. This isn’t how I remember it.”

Gabriel scoffed. “This is Cas’s idea. He wanted his child born with the stars in his eyes. Anyways, this way.”

As they walked among clouds that were surprisingly firm beneath his feet, Dean could hear little whimpers. On top of a bed of clouds was the most beautiful being Dean had ever seen. Translucent blue skin shimmered with golden threads throughout, and there were wings spread out beneath him. Never having seen him in his true form, Dean could still somehow tell this was Cas. Castiel was amazing even as he screamed in obvious pain. A sudden thought hit him that he hadn’t asked how angels were actually born. He didn’t know if it would be messy or where the baby angel would exit. The idea put a lump in his throat. But then Cas opened his blue eyes, focused on Dean and smiled.

“Dean.” That’s all he said, but hearing an angel’s voice say his name felt like being caressed. Dean hurried forward and gripped Cas’s long blue fingers. Cas sighed in pleasure. “You came.”

“Wouldn’t miss it.” But a frown marred Dean’s face.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. I didn’t know what you’d say.”

Seeing Cas in so much discomfort, Dean decided that it didn’t matter. “I know now.” That seemed to be all that needed to be said, and Cas went back to panting and screaming.

Gabriel moved onto the other side of Cas and shouted encouragement. Suddenly Cas’s skin turned bright white and Dean tried to shield his eyes. With what looked and sounded like an explosion, an angel flew out of Cas’s chest. Gabriel caught the new angel that was the size of a fruit basket and moved the angel into Cas’s arms. Dean looked on in wonder. Streaks of diamonds-like tears fell out of Cas’s eyes.

“You have a name?” Dean whispered.

“Yes. MaryAnn.” Cas smiled at Dean. Dean leaned forward and captured his lips with his own.

“You’re amazing.” Cas let Dean hold the first angel to be born in two thousand years. Dean looked at his girl and then at his angel. He was the luckiest human alive. And Sammy was going to have an angel for a niece. Their lives were so strange, but he wouldn’t change it for the world.

Heh, that would have been funny, but I sort of wanted to name it after Dean's mom. But an angel named just Mary, might have been too much. Thanks for reading.

Dean would have a frisky soul. But only Cas can have his soul babies. They're meant to be.
