Title: Eternal Wishes
Author: libra_traveller
Pairing: John/Rodney
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Rodney finds an ancient device that holds a genie that grants his wishes. Answer to genie challenge by Gaia.
Author's Note: Aladdin had nothing on this genie.

In one of the many labs of Atlantis, Rodney McKay was busy filing away reports on the different technologies and other items found around the base. He picked up one oddly shaped device and noticed writing on the outside, smeared by dust and dirt. He rubbed the filth away and immediately heard a loud pop. Pink smoke began spiraling out of the device in his hands. It formed into a large man with cuffs on his wrists. Rodney was so shocked that he let go of the device and it shattered on the floor.

A deep voice boomed out. “Master, you have destroyed my home, also known as my prison. Therefore I will stay with you indefinitely and grant you anything you desire.”

Rodney fainted. When he woke up five minutes later, the man was leaning over him with a surprised look on his face. Rodney, startled, asked “Who are you? What are you?”

“I am Rudolph, a genie.”

“Did I hit my head on the way down because I thought you said Rudolph? The genie bit I believe; I mean I’ve seen Aladdin. So how many wishes do I get?”

Finally they seemed to be on target. “As many wishes as you desire. I will also answer any question you ask of me.” The genie looked sincere.

Rodney’s gaze grew thoughtful. “Can anyone other than me see you?”

“No. Only you can see me, Master.”

“That’s no good. People will think I’ve gone crazy if I’m seen talking to myself. Oh. I’ll just wear an ear piece and pretend I’m talking to someone over it.” By now Rodney had picked himself up off the floor and stood with a hand to the back of his thudding head.

Rudolph wishing to be helpful offered to rid McKay of his headache.

“Oh thank you.” A pink glow surrounded his head and then the pain was gone. Now that he could think clearly, Rodney decided to wish for something they still needed plenty of. “I wish for a zero-point module.”

“Granted.” A ZPM appeared next to Rodney’s feet.

As it turned out, it was good that the Daedalus already brought them a ZPM as this one was depleted. Rodney gave the so-called genie a glare.

“There are some rules I should have mentioned. One, you need to be very specific. Two, you cannot ask for the same thing twice. Three, I cannot change people such as their feelings or whether they are alive or dead.”

“Fine. Where did you come from?”

“I ascended many millennia ago. I was punished for helping others with their innermost wants and needs. They, the other ascended beings, put me in that object to last eternity. If any person were to release me I was allowed to grant them three wishes then I must return to the object. Since you broke it I need not return. In a way I am free.”

“Except you have to grant me wishes. Is there no way I can release you?”

“None. You would need to truly wish for no more help from me.”

“Since I cannot imagine always having you following me, I’m sure I can work something out.”

Rodney began walking out of the lab with a big pink shadow following him. No one he passed noticed the genie. He entered a transporter and hit the place on the map that would take him to the mess hall. “Okay Genie,” he muttered into his ear piece. “I wish they were serving Athosian sweet bread and apples.” Both items were only served once a week and they just had them two days ago.

Entering the mess, Rodney found apples and sweet bread being put out. “I could get used to this,” he whispered. The genie gained a slightly disappointed look.

Later Rodney went to the main laboratory. There he softly asked the genie for explanations about the various objects strewn about the table. Rudolph would talk while Rodney made notations on everything from trash receptacles to cooking tools. The other scientists, namely Kavanagh, were disturbed by how fast Rodney was working. Zelenka had Rodney test what he wrote down and was quite annoyed that Rodney kept being right.

When Kavanagh accused him of cheating, which made no sense whatsoever, Rodney said, “I wish Kavanagh would get his pony-tail caught in something.” Kavanagh who was sitting down at a lab table turned around when he heard Rodney speak. He closed his laptop behind him on his hair. He squeaked and desperately tried to open the laptop but it would not budge. Kavanagh uselessly struggled eventually pulling out some of his hair in the process. Zelenka opened it for him. Kavanagh went to the infirmary to get some pain-killers and to get away from the guffawing scientists.

“Thank you.” Rodney laughed.

“You’re welcome, Master.” Rudolph said.

At the end of the day when Rodney received all the reports on projects from all the scientists, he wished for them to be condensed into one report. That night he went to sleep earlier than he ever had.

“I wish my blanket was warm and… could you sing me a lullaby.” Rudolph did not know any lullabies so he hummed a little ditty he remembered his mother once sang to him when he was a child.

In the morning, Rodney had a briefing to go to. He had forgotten to get his clothes washed and all he had was a wrinkled shirt and wrinkled pants. “I wish my clothes were clean and pressed.”

“At your command.” Rudolph found these simple wishes tedious but nevertheless did not want to have to do anything outrageous.

As he walked into the briefing room everyone stared at the happy smile on Rodney’s face. He knew that with a genie everything could go right with just a wish.

“Having a good day, Rodney?” Elizabeth Weir asked.

“A brilliant one actually. I wish everyday could be this great.” Rodney added.

“That’s pushing it.” Rudolph remarked. Rodney shrugged, it was worth a try.

Elizabeth gestured Rodney over to a seat. “Well let’s get started. We have a few possible destinations for your next mission. Colonel Sheppard do you have someone in mind to add to your team?”

Rodney mumbled, “I wish it was someone I liked.”

“Yes. Captain Wright.” John Sheppard seemed surprised as if that name was not the one he originally had in mind.

“Alright then.” Elizabeth proceeded to explain the value of visiting each planet on the list. One had trade possibilities, another an interesting power source and the third plant life worth retrieving.

Rodney obviously wanted to check out the power source. He argued strongly for it, but Teyla wanted to deal with the people for trading. “I wish you’d see my point that I’d be most useful checking out the power source.”

Elizabeth’s face twitched. “I do see your point Rodney. Okay you have a go to PXS-537.” The rest of the team was startled and annoyed that Rodney got his way. John was suspicious.

While leaving the briefing room, Rodney got a call from one of his scientists. He whined “I wish you could take care of the problem yourself.”

The scientist said “Never mind McKay, I’ve got it.”

John slid up next to Rodney. “I’ve noticed you keep throwing the ‘w’ word around.”

“‘W’ word, what are you five? And I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Rodney tried to act nonchalant.

“You keep getting your wishes granted, it’s weird.” John’s curiosity was driving him nuts.

“You’re imagining things Sheppard.”

“Fine be that way.” John turned around and walked the other way.

Rodney felt hurt that he had to snub John that way. “I wish I could tell him about you.”

“You can Master.”

“I can?” Rodney looked up with a grin on his face that quickly flickered away. “He’ll think I’m crazy.”

“Probably,” Rudolph agreed.

Rodney went to his room to take a quick nap before the mission. His day was losing its glow.

Standing in front of the gate, Rodney whispered seemingly to himself, “I wish this pack wasn’t so heavy.” Instead of it lightening, John came over and helped adjust the straps making it feel more even. “Thanks,” he said to both Sheppard and the genie.

They went through the gate and for a second Rodney though his genie had not come with him but then he saw the pink tinged man behind him. They began their trek to the location of the power readings. It was not far enough to bother bringing the puddle-jumper. The closer they got the higher the readings. So far there had been no evidence of a population.

The power readings came from a round object feeding into the ground. From what Rodney could discern from the Ancient text of the walls protecting the device, it acted as a way to keep the land fertile, supplying it with endless nutrients.

Rodney wanted to know how it worked, so he turned it off and began examining its crystals. Unfortunately for him and the team, the people of that planet had been stalking them and found this to be a desecration of their most sacred artifact. They had fairly advance energy weapons. Rodney quickly turned the device back on but that did not stop them. He ran with the team back to the gate while Sheppard laid cover fire. Captain Wright got blasted in the leg.

“I wish we wouldn’t get hit!” Rodney shouted to the genie following him. After that all the blasts missed them. They ran through the gate after sending identification, Teyla carrying Wright. “I wish his leg would heal.” If not for that wish, Wright may have lost use of that leg.

John heard this wish as well as the one about not getting hit. After they were checked out in the infirmary, he pulled Rodney aside. “Tell me what’s going on,” he demanded.

“Not here.” Rodney dragged John into an empty corridor. “You’re not going to believe me and you’ll think I’m insane.”

With a smirk John turned to him and said, “Don’t worry, I already know you’re cracked.”

“Oh, ha ha.” Despite the joking Rodney was still afraid of what John would think of him. “Yesterday I found a strange device in the lab. A being came out of it and said it would grant me wishes.”

“You’re kidding. Tell me you’re kidding. A genie, you found a frickin genie?”

“He’s an Ancient who was punished for helping people. I accidentally broke his home and because of that he’s giving me an endless supply of wishes. He also gives me information about Ancient technology and other objects in the labs.”

“Wicked.” John was stunned by this news.

“So you don’t think I’ve gone bonkers?”

“No, I don’t think you’ve gone bonkers. But this is insane. A real genie, wow.”

“Yeah, I may have passed out when I saw him.”

“Oh that is so you.”

“Hmph… I’d been working for hours and must have forgotten to eat.”

“Yeah, yeah. So what’s his name, it is a he, right?”

“Yes, and you wouldn’t believe me.”

“Oh come on.”

“Rudolph.”

“Like the reindeer?”

“Oh go ahead, make fun of the genie. He’s glaring at you, just so you know.”

John appeared startled. “What, he’s here?”

“He follows me everywhere.”

“That must be awkward.”

“Just a bit but his presence was soothing in my sleep.”

“Now that’s just creepy. He watches you sleep?”

“I don’t know, he doesn’t have anything else to do.” Rodney felt exasperated.

“Hey, want to play poker with me and some of the guys? Use your genie to get good hands?”

“Why would you want me to win?”

“Well everyone knows that you’re not the greatest and I may have made a bet saying you’d win.” John looked hopeful.

“You what?!” Rodney was pissed.

John started to whine. “Come on Rodney, you can win now, it’d be good, please?”

“Oh fine, but you’ll owe me.”

“Great!” John was clapping his hands in pre-emptive celebration.

They went to Radek’s room where a table was setup. Bates and another marine were there as well as an Air Force buddy of John’s. Everyone grinned when they saw Rodney. “I wish I get good hands and bluff well.” That just made them grin harder. Radek dealed. They were all smiles until Rodney started winning. His stack of chips just kept getting higher and no one could read his moves. John just got happier. At the end of the game after everyone had folded for the last time, John turned to them and asked for his winnings for the bet. They forked over the chocolate.

“Now wasn’t that fun?” John asked as they walked down the hall towards Rodney’s quarters.

“Okay, I had fun. Rudolph you were great.”

“Thank you, Master, I should add that next time you play you will be horrible again.” Rodney winced.

“That’s just odd seeing you talk to thin air.”

“Sorry.” Rodney was more amused than apologetic.

“I wish this night could go on forever.” John said wistfully. He was thrilled to spend so much time with Rodney.

“He only grants my wishes, which is good because I’d like to see daylight again sometime.”

“I just meant I enjoyed spending time with you, seeing you smile.”

Rodney gave him a bewildered look. “You don’t need a genie to hang out with me.” They arrived at Rodney’s room. “Why don’t you come in?”

They walked into the room. The genie stayed out in the hall, surprising Rodney.

John stood near the desk. “Rodney, what’s wrong?”

“The genie’s still in the hall.”

“Ask him what that’s about.”

“Master, I grant inner wishes as well and you obviously want to be alone with the Major.”

Rodney blushed. “Never mind, he says he’ll keep watch out there, you know, crazy Ancients.” He went and sat down on the bed and gestured for John to sit in the chair.

“So have you asked for any extravagant wishes?” John had to start a conversation and it was the only thing he could think of.

“Not really, well a ZPM, but of course I got a depleted one and Rudolph has this rule about not asking for something twice.” Rodney lounged on the bed and John could not help thinking of lying down with him.

“Hey, McKay, what would you say if I told you one of my wishes was to be with you, intimately?”

“I’d say you’re a goof, and should get over here quick.”

John jumped up and launched himself at Rodney. They began kissing fervently. “My wish that I was too afraid to ask for was you.”

From out in the hall they heard “Your wish is my command.” Then the pink tinged genie dispersed having made two people extremely happy, his only desire.

Huh. I don't remember making a genie challenge . . . but I'm glad I apparantly did. The ancient punishment as genie was a really cool concept. Wish they'd do it on the show.

Well, it was almost a year ago that I wrote this. Thanks. That would be cool to see on the show, heh.
