Atlantis Team Three went to planet EVL-616. They never returned. Team One is sent out to see what had happened to them.
It’s dark and raining. They can hear tortured screaming and loud animal growls but none of them can figure out where it comes from. Suddenly they hear a loud whine and demented cries. They run through the forest and find themselves in an empty town.
The cries stop leaving loud thumps in their wake. They think it comes from one house. They take out their guns and approach the door, two on lookout. When the leader turns the knob and pushes, the door creaks open. They hear a man screaming in pain and the sound of dunking. Two of them run into the room ready to shoot. They search the whole house, every floor, but find nothing. They quickly leave and move towards another house.
The gravel crunches under their feet as they move. An owl’s hooting breaks the silence. They look for any nearby trees within the town, but find none, nor any birds overhead. The clunk of shoes invades the night air once again. It’s accompanied by the sound of chains. They’re frightened, but continued surreptitiously looking through windows in an attempt to find the cause of the sounds.
With a flash of light a man is revealed. He’s hunched over, covered in blood. They run towards him, but when they reach the spot where he had been, all they find is a pile of ashes. The clap of thunder breaks their stupor and they start searching again.
The next building they come across has a lantern hanging in the window. The oil burns strongly. Carefully one of them knocks on the door. A barking answers them. They creak open the door and bats fly out. They scream, flapping their arms and hands to get the bats away. After the bats pass they investigate the room and find a letter on the bed. It says, ‘Beware’, nothing else. They leave the room as fast as they can.
Outside a strange melody leads them down the street towards a large shed. They walk inside and an earthquake knocks the building around them. The light from a candle spreads to the wood of the building and sets it on fire. Flames jump up around them and they dash through them. They catch their breath several yards from the fire. Eventually a down pour of rain douses the fire. Shakily they stand up.
A clattering of dishes startles them and they run towards another house, weapons raised. A gun shot echoes behind them. They turn to look as they run for cover, but they can’t see anything in the dark. The sound of a piano entices them into the nearest building. As soon as they enter, thousands of spiders fall on them, big ones and little ones. The spiders crawl through their hair and past the barriers of their clothes. They try to scream but the spiders fill their mouths. They struggle, falling down to the ground. Before they pass out, the spiders disappear.
On the floor in their place is a knee-deep puddle of blood with dead fish bones swimming through it. They get to their feet and sludge their way out of the house, into the fresh dry air. The rain’s gone and their clothes are spotless.
Clearly seen above them are two full moons. Their faces shine with awe and fright.
They are distracted by the faint image of a woman down the road playing with her child. Both phantoms have gaping wounds and glazed eyes. When they blink there is nothing there. With a concerted nod they move towards the center of town.
They find a hospital. They search inside and find corpses, each one with several years of decay. The smell sickens them but they can’t escape. The stench entrances them and prevents them from moving.
The ground rises up, branches enveloping one of them. The others fight the branches but they get caught too. An axe appears and chops the branches away, freeing them.
As soon as they scramble away from the axe they are caught by music that drags their limbs through a crazy dance. Piping accompanies their movements. It takes them to the edge of town farthest away from their Puddle-Jumper.
They spot a bridge over a river. The water rises up around them. A demon face comes out of the water shouting at them in a language they have never heard. They run off the bridge into the trees, hoping the other team went this way.
It’s not long before they find the four sitting on the ground mumbling nonsense. From overhead a Puddle-Jumper flies. The trees part to let the Jumper land. They quickly enter through the opened back, expecting to see someone from Atlantis piloting. No one is there.
They drag the other team in and fly through the gate to Atlantis. It’s planned that they’ll shut this world out of their system. They’ll never go back.
